It has been in production since 1906, and features a pit almost one kilometre deep and 4km wide. Bingham Canyon Mine is the largest man-made excavation in the world. ✅ The world’s largest man-made excavation – a US copper mine – has been shut down by an enormous landslide that smashed roads and buildings and left two-thirds of the pit base buried. Another, less severe slide occurred on May 31, 2021. A second slide caused an evacuation of 100 workers on September 11, 2013. ✅ The massive slide was expected to cut production of mined copper by 100,000 tonnes (98,000 long tons 110,000 short tons). As a result of warnings produced by this system, mining operations had been shut down the previous day in anticipation of the slide and there were no injuries. On the basis that the mine's steep walls made it a high risk for landslides, an interferometric radar system had been previously installed to monitor the ground's stability. It is possibly the largest historic non-volcanic landslide in North America. Around 2.3–2.5 billion cubic feet (65×106–70×106 m3) of dirt and rock thundered down the side of the pit. ✅ At 9:30 pm on April 10, 2013, a landslide occurred at the mine. ✅ Rio Tinto Kennecott mine - A massive slope failure has occurred at the open pit of the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah. ![]() ✅ Want to learn more! I encourage you get/borrow a copy of this book: In fact, Rio Tinto's willingness to share information about the Manefay Landslide is a major contributor for the widespread use of radars in open pit mines today." There were no injuries or deaths as a result of these landslides. It should also be noted that the geotechnical team at the mine predicted both of these landslides so the mine was evacuated beforehand. This video is from the 2021 Leo Landslide, which is just a fraction of the Manefay Landslide. That landslide happened at night and there are no publically available videos. " Just to be clear - this is not a video of the massive Manefay Landslide at the Bingham Canyon Mining in 2013. The video here is not the 2013 landslide! ✅ Thanks to Brad Ross who brought this to my attention. Near-face stockpile open pit mining: a method to enhance NPV and quality of the plant throughput The results reveal that implementing the NFS method can improve the net present value by 9.3% and decrease the plant MWT head grade deviation by 20%. To quantitatively measure the performance of the NFS mining method, we implemented the model in a real mining case study and compared the results with the traditional open pit mining method with an out-of-pit crusher. In this paper, we developed a mixed integer linear programming model to solve long-term production scheduling problem in open pit mines. The introduction of NFS, however, requires reconsideration of production planning in open pit mines. There are many theoretical advantages in comparison to the traditional open-pit mining method, such as higher tolerance on uncertainties without compromising production, higher equipment utilisation, less operating cost, better blending results, etc. The stockpile decouples the whole mining flow into two weakly related subsystems, which are the mining subsystem and processing subsystem. Near face stockpile (NFS) is a new mining concept which combines the IPCC (in-pit crushing and conveying) method with an in-pit near-face (and near crusher) stockpile. Stockpiles are of great importance in open pit mine production scheduling and are widely used for different reasons while being placed in different locations.
